Mrs. Rachel Barrett

Hello! I am thrilled to be at LPS for my fourth year of teaching. Previously, I taught sixth grade World Cultures at Denton ISD and English, Language Arts and Reading at Gainesville ISD. I also have taught several reading intervention classes and have a passion for helping kids develop such a critical skill, as well as discover a genuine appreciation and love for literature. This will be my second year here at Leadership Prep and I will be teaching all eighth grade English courses, as well as a World History course for sophomores.

My educational philosophy is that students should be supported and encouraged by their teachers to take ownership of their own goals and life's trajectory. I pride myself in working in collaboration with my students, their parents, and my colleagues to ensure that the kids in my classes are empowered to reach their full potential in life. I have a lot of fun when I teach, because I believe teachers who love teaching teach their students to love learning. However, I've also been known to give my students tough love when they need it. I believe making mistakes is a valuable part of the learning process and encourage my students to always "grow through what they go through". I would do just about anything for my students and care deeply about each of them long after they move on to the next grade level and even beyond the walls of our school.

As far as my class goes, much of our learning together will be centered around novel studies. We will be supplementing our reading of both classical and more modern selections with several online platforms, which are carefully designed to track each students' individual progress and pinpoint areas for improvement. We will also be doing plenty of writing a variety of different kinds of texts, where students will learn to cultivate a strong voice and to articulate ideas they feel passionately about. Students will receive plenty of daily grades for discussions, in-class activities and progress they make in their writing assignments. Most of our major grades will come from essays and of course some really exciting projects I have in the works!

My favorite thing to do outside of the classroom is spend time with my husband, who serves our community as a sheriff's deputy, and our three doodle dogs Winston, Arlo and Cooper. They keep us on our toes! I also love to cook, watch classic movies, spend time outside in any capactiy, and listen to podcasts.

If you ever have any questions or would simply like to touch base, please do not hesitate to reach me by email. I look forward to working with you!
