Gifted and Talented Program

  • Individuals often demonstrate their gifts and talents in many ways; one individual may possess exceptional academic talents and another may be an exceptional artist, musician, athlete, or performer. Leadership Prep School's Gifted Program is designed for the student who demonstrates the need for advanced academic challenges and for opportunities to develop his/her creative thinking. Leadership Prep School's Gifted Program may not meet the needs of students whose gifts and talents are in areas other than advanced academics unless the student participates in the various fine arts classes that are currently offered.
    The state's goal for GT students is to ensure that those students who participate in GT services demonstrate skills in self-directed learning, thinking, research, and communication. GT students develop innovative products and sophisticated performances that reflect individuality and creativity and are targeted to an audience outside the classroom.

    At Leadership Prep School

    • All teachers have completed a minimum of 30 hours of GT training and are qualified by the state to provide instruction for GT students.
    • Differentiation occurs within the classroom through enrichment activities, accelerated instruction, and opportunities to explore, create, and go deeper into a topic.
    • Our Project Based Learning (PBL) approach is ideal for gifted learners because it promotes student engagement and creativity, and it allows students to expand their knowledge on topics in which they are interested.  It stretches them at every level and in each subject.  Our students are learning how to create professional quality products and how to present themselves in a professional manner.

    Qualification Process

    •  Students in grades 1st-12th who are referred will be assessed during the Fall and begin receiving services during the first semester.  All kindergarten students are screened in February and services begin in March.  Students may be referred to the gifted program by teachers, parents, principals, counselors, or by the students themselves.  Students are assessed during the regular school day. 
    • New students who were previously identified at another district will need to meet our GT program qualifications. LPS will use the previous district's scores when possible; however, students may need to complete GT testing at LPS. Teachers can begin differentiation based on apparent needs at any time.
